Confederate States Zouave Battalion, Louisiana Confederate States
Zouave Battalion, Louisiana 1st Zouave Battalion was formed in March, 1861, at
Camp Walker, near New Orleans, Louisiana, by G.A.G. Coppens. It boasted of many
experienced veterans of the Crimean War. Their uniforms were red Turkish
trousers, red kepis, and blue jackets, and their orders were given in French.
With six companies and about 600 officers and men, the unit moved to Virginia.
Here it was assigned to the Department of the Peninsula, and later to Pryor's
and Starke's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The battalion was active from
the Seven Days' Battles to Fredericksburg, then served on provost duty in the
Department of Richmond. In February, 1864, it had a force of 18 officers and 41
men, and in June was guarding the Meherrin River Bridge. It totaled 9 officers
and 32 men in September and appears to have disbanded in December. The
commanders were Lieutenant Colonels Georges A.G. Coppens and M. Alfred Coppens,
and Majors Fulgence DeBordenave and Weldemar Hyllested. 1,576 MEN

Crescent Regiment, Louisiana Infantry Crescent Infantry Regiment was
organized with men from New Orleans and entered Confederate service in May,
1861. The unit fought in the Battle of Shiloh and reported 23 killed, 84
wounded, and 20 missing. During the summer of 1863 the Confederate Guards
response Battalion and the 11th Louisiana Infantry Battalion merged into the
regiment. It served in Mouton's and H. Gray's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi
Department, and was active in Western Louisiana and the operations against
Banks' Red River Campaign. During the spring of 1865 it disbanded. The field
officers were Colonels James H. Beard, Abel W. Bosworth, and M. J. Smith;
Lieutenant Colonels Franklin H. Clack, Arthur W. Hyatt, George P. McPheeters,
and George Soule; and Majors Mercer Canfield and Myford McDougall. 2,068 MEN

Fenner's Battery, Louisiana Light Artillery Fenner's
Battery was organized during the later summer of 1862. It served at Port Hudson
and in October had 58 officers and men present for duty. Later the unit was
assigned to Maxey's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It
served for a time at Jackson, then was ordered to Mobile. In April, 1864, it
joined the Army of Tennessee with 110 effectives. Assigned to J. W. Eldridge's
Battalion of Artillery, the company participated in the Atlanta Campaign and
Hood's winter operations in Tennessee. It returned to Mobile, aided in the
defense of the city, and surrendered in May, 1865. Captain Charles E. Fenner was
