Miles' Legion, Louisiana Volunteers Miles' Legion was organized at Port Hudson, Louisiana, during the early summer of 1862 with a cavalry and infantry battalion. It was commanded by Colonel William R. Miles but did not serve as one command. The men of the five-company cavalry battalion were recruited in the parishes of East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, and St. Tammany. It skirmished in Louisiana attached to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, then was assigned to Ross' and Scott's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The battalion engaged the Federals in Mississippi and Louisiana and disbanded in the spring of 1865. Major James T. Coleman was in command. Members of the seven-company infantry battalion were raised in Livingstone, Orleans, and Tangipahoa parishes. It was assigned to Maxey's and Buford's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and captured at Port Hudson in July, 1863. After being exchanged the battalion was not reorganized. However, many of the men transferred to other Louisiana units. It was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Frederick B. Brand. 1,696 MEN

Moody's Company, Louisiana Artillery (Madison Light Artillery) Madison Light Artillery was organized at Tullulah, Louisiana, during the winter of 1861-1862 with men from Madison Parish. The company soon moved to Virginia and served in S.D. Lee's, E.P. Alexander's, and F. Huger's Battalion of Artillery. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then was involved in the Petersburg siege and the Appomattox Campaign. This unit lost twenty-four percent of the 135 at Gettysburg and surrendered with 3 officers and 41 men. Its commanders were Captains George V. Moody and Thomas J. Richards. 480 MEN
