W. M. Reese

W. M. Reese was born in Warren County, Georgia on December 16, 1847 and was baptized in 1864 while attending Mercer University. He was ordained to preach in 1868 and was educated at Mercer University and the University of Chicago, where he received his doctorate. In 1870, he moved to Louisiana for a year and settled in Franklin Parish. Dr. Reese then moved to Jasper, Texas where he edited a Baptist paper. Later he served as president of Sabine Valley University and as a state missionary.

In 1888, he met and married Miss May Courtney of Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana and had six children: Grace Reese Zimmerman, E. F. Reese, W. C. Reese, Ruby Reese Key, Dr. H. C. Reese and Esta Mae Reese Hettler. Dr. Reese served as pastor of First Baptist Homer from 1896 to 1898.

Dr. Reese became president of Mt. Lebanon University at the death of W. P. Carter in 1885 and served three years as president of Claiborne College in Homer. He spent the latter part of his life in Texas and Mississippi as a missionary.

Most of his writing was destroyed in a fire that level Mt. Lebanon University, but he is known for "The Interwoven Gospels," part of the "System Bible Study." He was known as a excellent preacher and as sympathetic and generous man. 27
