Shervert Hughes Frazier

Dr. Frazier was born in Connehatta, Mississippi September 22, 1891. He attended a Methodist college in Meridian and another in Jackson, Mississippi. On July 15, 1915, he united with the First Baptist Church of Shreveport, Louisiana after hearing a sermon by Dr. M. E. Dodd. He was so convinced of his call that he persuaded Dr. Dodd to have him ordained that same day. He entered both Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Texas Christian University at the same time and received his Th. M and B. A. degrees the same year.

He then entered the army to serve in World War I as a chaplain and served overseas. After the war, he returned to the seminary for graduate work and accepted a position as Educational director of First Baptist, Shreveport. Soon, he was called to Homer Baptist Church and served for four years as pastor, from 1921 to 1925.

During his term, a huge building program was begun, resulting in the present physical plant of the church. He started an active enlistment campaign for Sunday School and started a tradition of evangelism and education which is still a part of church life today.

He was the first pastor to sponsor a trip to the Holy Land and led a delegation from the church to The Baptist Alliance meeting in Stockholm, Sweden in 1923. In 1926 he accepted a call to First church of Marshall, Texas and led a building program there. He later served as pastor of Connell Memorial Church in Fort Worth and taught at the East Texas Baptist College in Marshall. Dr. Frazier was one of the speakers at the one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of the church in 1969 and served as interim pastor for a time between the tenures of Rufus Zachry and George Hall.

He was married to Mary Lowman of Bernice and had three children. A tribute to his vision and hard work was paid him by Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Fortson of Homer, Louisiana: 'As a pastor, Dr. Frazier was an untiring worker, and by precept and example led his people to undertake willingly any new task, and the perform the doing of it. He lived in intimate touch with his people, sharing their sorrows and their highest aspirations.

By nature he has a real shepherd's heart.' Dr. Frazier was honored by being asked to deliver one of the two sermons in commemoration of the one hundred twenty- fifth anniversary of the church in 1970. 35
