Rufus H. Zachry

Rufus Zachry served as pastor of Homer church from 1956 to 1958 and came to First Baptist Homer from the Second Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas and left to serve as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Metairie. He now lives in Devers, Texas and enjoys fishing and his florist shop.

While he was pastor of the church, Genevery Zachary offered to keep his children, Rufus (Rudy) and John in "big church." Since the pastor's wife was church pianist at that time, the offer was gratefully accepted. To keep the children quiet, Genevery offered each child a piece of hard candy. Though John had no trouble, Rudy began to choke and a flurry of backslapping and encouragement quickly drew the attention of all in the vicinity. Genevery quickly hurried the little boy out, to the obvious dismay of his parents. He's fine, she soon reported, to the relief of all. Soon relief change to amusement, however, when the congregation noticed the pastor had lost his place! Rudy is now a preacher in Bethesda, Maryland. 41
