Eugene Lamar Skelton

Dr. Skelton was the pastor of First Baptist Church, Homer from 1952 to 1956. He was born October 29, 1914 in McKinney, Texas and ordained in 1935 at the North McKinney Baptist Church.

Dr. Skelton married Miss Ann Thomas of Copeville, Texas in 1940 and the couple had four children: Henry (Hank), Laura Ann, Bill and Martha. He attended Baylor University and later received his Th. D. in philosophy of religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

His previous pastorate was at First Baptist Church, Leonard, Texas and he served as pastor in First Baptist of Pascagoula. Dr. Skelton has written for Open Windows, Adventure and other Baptist publications and is the author of Meet The Prophets, a biography of twelve Old Testament prophets. Other works include Ten Fastest Growing Baptist Sunday Schools and a novel, A Walk in the Light.

It was under his leadership the church elected to build the Education building in 1956 and the Sunday School attendance improved from an average of 372 to 573 each Sunday. Dr. Skelton firmly declares the loving Christian fellowship and hard working assistance he received as pastor enabled him to succeed in his twenty years of service with the Sunday School Board and Outreach programs.

When asked if he had any special memories of his tenure in Homer, he said every day was a joyful one and that this church was and always would be a very special one to him and his family. 40
